Post-Modern Drunk: Walk Away Price
I remember reading back in high school--maybe in a Newsweek or US News or something like that, that the average white collar worker will earn $2 million total over the course of their life.

I didn't even have a driver's license at that point, so I had no idea how far $2 million would go. It seemed an immensely large amount of money at the time. The older I get, however, the smaller that seems. It doesn't help that I've watched a series of movies where the final score, compared to that, doesn't seem worth it. A Simple Plan with it's $3 million split amongst brothers. True Romance, with only a couple $100 thousand in drugs. Shallow Grave, with only 50,000 pounds.

How big of a score do you need before you walk away from everything. If you could get away with it (I know, a big if, depending on the circumstances), how big of a score would you need before you'd walk away from your life? Do you have a price?

Back when I first started thinking about this, I mulled it over after reading the article, and decided, at the time, that my Walk Away Price would have to be $2 million. I proclaimed that to my friends, polled them on their own Walk Away Price. It was a polite conversation piece for me for awhile. That, and why your favorite song on the White Album should replace what your sign is as the bullshit question you ask someone casually.

$2 million.

I have a real life now. A girlfriend. Cats. I'm not sure what my Walk Away Price would be, but it would have to be significantly higher. I'm not 100% sure I even have one anymore. I think they're the luxury of youth.

I guess now I should be nervous about a large quantity of illicit cash falling into my lap, because if you're not going to Walk Away with it, well, then you have to figure out whether to turn it into the cops and get killed by the owners, or return it to the owners and get killed by them, or dispose of it, or something else.

These are the things I worry about, apparently.
