Post-Modern Drunk: Mix Post: Work is the Curse of the Drinking Class
People always talk about Mixtapes being the ideal way to express yourself to another person--you take someone's perfect music, put it in a particular order that tells the story that you want to convey, and you've got something that feels heartfelt and direct and from you, personally.

Rarely does anyone do this with basic text:

"Let me be the first to admit that the naked truth about me is to the naked truth about Salvador Dali as an old ukulele in the attic is to a piano in a tree, and I mean a piano with breasts."
-James Thurber

"We are born, so to speak, provisionally, it doesn't matter where. It is only gradually that we compose ourselves within our true place of origin so that we may be born there retrospectively and each day more definitely."
-Rilke.

"Mine is a most peaceable disposition. My wishes are: a humble cottage with a thatched roof, but a good bed, good food, the freshest milk and butter, flowers before my window, and a few fine trees before my door; and if God wants to make my happiness complete, he will grant me the joy of seeing some six or seven of my enemies, hanging from those trees. Before their death I shall, moved in my heart, forgive them all the wrong they did me in their lifetime. One must, it is true, forgive one's enemies--but not before they have been hanged."
-Heine

"When an item struck his imagination he would sometimes write a sentence or two down in his notebook. He kept the notebook in his overcoat pocket, as he was not the type to write ostentatiously in bars or coffee shops. Just then he felt an image coming up to the surface, something about the faces outside the window, like a whole school of fish turning at once, the silvery bodies in three dimensions, something about the way they didn't recognize themselves as beautiful but just kept on schooling to their separate ends. Then remembered that Pound had gotten there first: petals on a wet, black bough...It was not fair that so many of his best ideas were someone else's."
-Kevin Canty, Winslow in Love

"I wrote much less than most people who write, but drank much more than most people who drink."
-Guy Debord

"If I had my way I'd be in love all the time all over the world with a rifle in one hand and a typewriter in the other and a bellyfull of good whiskey. This limited existence is a shitty deal."
-Hunter S. Thompson, letter, APril 17, 1962

"I've never had a relationship with a woman that's lasted longer than the one between Hitler and Eva Braun."
-Woody Allen

"In America sex is an obsession, in other parts of the world it is a fact."
-Marlene Dietrich

"If your sexual fantasies were truly of interest to others, they would no longer be fantasies."
-Fran Lebowitz

"All these women! And so pretty, most of them. And so strange, too.
Mysterious, rather.
Where do they all come from? Where are they all going to? Ah, shall we ever know!
Not one of them spares me a glance--and yet I love them all so much.
I look at each one as she passes, and her features are so burnt on my mind that I know I will never forget her to my dying day. Then she vanishes, and I have absolutely no recollection what she looked like.
Luckily, there are always prettier girls following behind.
And I would love them so, if only they would let me! But they all pass by. Shall I ever see any one of them again?"
-Alphonse Allais, from "Absinthe"

"She knocked me out. I mean it. I was about half in love with her by the time we sat down. That's the thing about girls. Every time they do something pretty, even if they're not much to look at, or even if they're sort of stupid, you fall half in love with them, and then you never know where the hell you are. Girls. Jesus Christ. They can drive you crazy. They really can."
-J.D. Salinger. "The Catcher in the Rye."

"I feel so miserable without you; it's almost like having you here."
-Stephen Bishop

"5. Never throw out the old ice. The second glass of whiskey should be poured over the remains of the first. The third over the second. The fourth over the third. The fifth over the fourth. The sixth over the rest of month, until it stops hurting so goddamn much."
-Manhattan Transfer

"When the French authorities mounted a public health campaign in the 1950s with posters that said 'L'alcool tue lentement' (alcohol kills you slowly), the abrasive avant-garde group the Lettrists went around writing underneath them, "'On n'est pas presses' ('We're in no hurry'). Or more abrasively, 'On s'en fout. On a le temps.' ('We don't give a fuck. We've got the time.')
-A. Hussey _The Game of War: The Life and Death of Guy Debord_

"You must always be drunk. Everything depends on it: it is the only question. So as not to feel the horrible burden of Time wrecking your back and bending you to the ground, you must get drunk without respite.
But on what? On wine, on poetry, or on virtue, whatever you like. But get drunk.
And if sometimes you wake up, on palace steps, on the green grass of a ditch, in your room's gloomy solitude, your intoxication already waning or gone, ask the wind, the waves, the stars, the birds, clocks, ask everything that flees, that sings, everything that speaks, ask what time it is. And the wind, the waves, the stars, the birds, clocks, will answer, "It is time to get drunk! So as not to be the martyred slaves of Time, get drunk; get drunk constantly! On wine, on poetry, or on virtue, as you wish."
-Charles Baudelaire, From _The Parisian Prowler_

"It would be enough,
If we were ever, just once, at the middle, fixed
In this Beautiful World of Ours, not as now
Helplessly at the edge, enough to be
Complete, because at the middle, if only in sense,
And in that enormous sense, merely enjoy."
-Wallace Stevens

"1929- A feeling that all liquor has been drunk and all it can do for one has been experienced, and yet--'Garcon, un Chablis-Mouton 1902, et pour commencer, une petite carafe de vine rose. C'est ca--merci.'"
-F. Scott Fitzgerald, "A Short Autobiography."
