Post-Modern Drunk: Laughed and Laid Your Head Random Ten (11/18/05)

1. "Reservations" by Wilco, from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
   10/10 - ...
   Wow.
   I just saw Jeff Tweedy in concert an hour ago, and this song leads off the Random Ten. Good shit.
   "I've got reservations about so many things, but not about you." It'd be sappy if it weren't so pained.
   
2. "Fool's Gold" by The Stone Roses, from The Complete Stone Roses
   8/10 - Coolness. Icy coolness. I've never bothered to listen to the lyrics of this song--they're comprehensible, but really superfluous when the song is this cool
   
3. "God Answers Back" by Clem Snide, from End of Love
   6/10 - Hmmm. And I might be seeing Clem Snide tonight. Hope the rest of the songs are more interesting or grow on me more than this one did.
   
4. "Shocker in Gloomtown" by The Breeders, from Pod Demos
   7/10 - Mmmm. Kim Deal.
   There were some other people in this band, too. And they did some good stuff. This is one of it. "Cannonball" is not their only good song.
   
5. "Beat on the Brat" by The Ramones, from Ramones
   8/10 - Sure, all the Ramones songs sound the same at the start. Because they were the masters of three chords, with which they crafted little two minute slices of pure enjoyment. Who else could make a supremely fun song about "beat[ing] on the brat with a baseball bat."
   
6. "The Happy Birthday Song" by Andrew Bird, from The Mysterious Production of Eggs
   5/10 - Andrew Bird does violin rock songs. They don't always rock. This song is twice as long as "Fake Palindromes" from the same album, and yet rocks less than a tenth of what that song does? Unfair. Totally unfair.
   
7. "Sweet Thing" by Van Morrison, from Astral Weeks
   10/10 - I don't really want to argue about this, so you should just accept this as law, but Astral Weeks is one of the greatest albums of all time. The slow but steady building beauty of this song is really hard to resist.
   
8. "My Dreamgirl Don't Exist" by Neutral Milk Hotel, from Invent Yourself a Shortcake
   9/10 - Jeff Mangum wrote an entire masterpiece of an album after being inspired by the Diary of Anne Frank. Clearly, he's got an even worse problem with love than I do--I fall for unattainable people, where circumstances or personalities clash. Mangum apparently falls for hypothetical people, dead people, or Communists. We should call him up and ask why.
   
9. "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" by Bob Dylan, from Highway 61 Revisited
   7/10 - Damn this Random 10 is great, even with a fair-to-middling Dylan song like this. Fair-to-middling Dylan is still fucking good (much better than, say, fair-to-middling Jakob Dylan).
   
10. "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" by Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, from American Graffiti Soundtrack
    8/10 - "Why do birds sing so gay?" Why indeed?

7.8/10 - Really really a great week for music, both with the Random Ten and, you know, in that reality thing.
