Post-Modern Drunk: Toxic Random Ten (12/2/05)

1. "The Late Great Libido" by Menomena, from I Am The Fun Blame Monster
   10/10 - "When Menomena makes it huge," Cryfok says to me at the first Menomena show in NYC, "we're going to be able to look back on this night and say 'I saw them back then.'" Until then, this incredible album will have to do.
   
2. "It's a Curse" by Wolf Parade, from Apologies to the Queen Mary
   6/10 - Wolf Parade approaches the home stretch on their great album with a song that suffers slightly from following their three best songs.
   
3. "Naomi" by Neutral Milk Hotel, from On Avery Island
   8/10 - As Ms. Touchy pointed out, NMH comes up a lot on the random ten, which is odd considering how few songs they've put out. Still, as long as they're as awesome as this, I can live with that.
   
4. "Catie" by Daniel Johnston, from Fun
   3/10 - I don't mean to kick a guy while he's possibly dying of lithium poisoning, but this by the numbers blues tune is just dull.
   
5. "You Were Meant For Me" by Jewel, from Pieces of You
   6/10 - Oh fuck.
   You've got to be kidding me.
   I'm never going to live this one down.
   I'm not going to justify it. But, ummm, I like this song.
   
6. "Madeline" by Yo La Tengo, from And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out
   6/10 - This is their strongest album. All you "I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One" advocates can just sit right down with the people who come out on the wrong side of the "Doolittle"/"Surfer Rosa" divide, and commiserate. Your very strong album has been defeated by an even stronger one.
   
7. "I Can't Explain" by The Who, from My Generation: The Very Best of the Who
   7/10 - "Can't explain, I think it's love, Try to say it to you, When I feel blue."
   
8. "Myopic Friends" by The Lucksmiths, from Where Were We?
   8/10 - "When we look back on it / we can't deny our love affair was so short-sighted." Some of the best lyrics wrapped up in a little 60s vibe.
   
9. "Bedroom Scene" by Delays, from Faded Seaside Glamour
   2/10 - This is about where I turn the album off, everytime.
   
10. "Tippin Toxic (Mike Jones & Paul Wall Vs. Britney Spears)" by Hollertonix, from Hollertonix, Volume 2
    8/10 - Yes. This is as close to Britney Spears as I get, with the strings and guitar of "Toxic" on here. And it works. It really works. Mike Jones says his name over and over again, Paul Wall handles the more complicated lyrics without hardly mentioning his name at all, and that 007 vibe goes crazy in the background. Thank you, Fluxblog.
