Post-Modern Drunk: This is the New Year. I Don't Feel Any Different, Random Ten (12/30/05)

1. "The Wayward Granddaughter" by The Fiery Furnaces, from Rehearsing My Choir
   4/10 - I'm obviously missing something with these guys, since a lot of my friends adore them, while I can't get through a single album in one sitting. Each song feels like "A Quick One While He's Away," which gets overwhelming.
   
2. "Free As a Bird" by The Beatles, from The Beatles Anthology, Vol. 1
   6/10 - I loved this when it came out, but I think it was mostly because the video that I saw, attached to the broadcast of Anthology, seemed so cool and rewarded Beatles obsessives for getting the random references to their songs.
   
3. "Insistor" by Tapes 'n Tapes, from The Loon
   7/10 - Another random musicblog download that turned out fairly well--kind of like if The Killers were covering a song to go on the "Pulp Fiction" soundtrack.
   
4. "Tokyo A-Go-Go" by The Magnetic Fields, from The Wayward Bus
   7/10 - Somehow, this song is about a paid assassin falling in love. Or something like that. I've never bothered with trying to figure it out much.
   
5. "Guelah Papyrus" by Phish, from A Picture of Nectar
   7/10 - I don't know how I thought I could keep this hidden. But I have most of Phish's albums on mp3. I've never bought one, but I, umm, have some, and like them. It's only really in concert (I've heard) that the annoying jam band stuff gets out of control.
   
6. "Romulus" by Sufjan Stevens, from Greetings from Michigan
   9/10 - "I was ashamed of her."
   
7. "The Origin of Love" by Hedwig, from Hedwig and the Angry Inch
   8/10 - Okay, the mixed mythology of this song kinda of bothers the geek in me, at times, but this is still awesome. "So we wrapped our arms around each other, Trying to shove ourselves back together."
   
8. "I'll Back You Up" by Dave Matthews Band, from Remember Two Things
   6/10 - Oh Christ. One of these was bad enough...but, umm, I have every Dave Matthews Album up to 2001, as well. I should just retire.
   
9. "Recycled Air" by The Postal Service, from Give Up
   7/10 - Not the best Postal Service song, but appropriate that it's the one about taking a plane somewhere. I don't really need to say anything more about this, because everyone should have this album by now and know what I'm talking about.
   
10. "Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie" by Joanna Newsom, from The Milk-Eyed Mender
    8/10 - The great closing song of her fantastic album--which if my repeated efforts to get you to check it out haven't been successful yet, nothing I say now is going to change anything.
    

6.9/10 - That relatively high score fails to take into account the damage Phish and DMB have done to my reputation.
