Post-Modern Drunk: This Is Not My Beautiful Friday Random Ten (3/17/06)
This is apparently my two year anniversary here at happyrobot. Happy St. Patrick's Day, too. So so so many reasons to drink, my Post-Modern Drinkers.

1. "I'm So Tired" by The Beatles, from The White Album
   10/10 - This is my favorite Beatles song. Also, just for the record, if you Google "I'm So Tired" and limit it to happyrobot, the vast majority of the results are from Art Colony.
   
2. "Once in a Lifetime" by The Talking Heads
   8/10 - "And you may ask yourself, well, how did I get here?"
   
3. "What Is and What Should Never Be" by Led Zeppelin, from II
   7/10 - I think every guy goes through a Led Zeppelin phase sometime in high school, or possibly later. I'm out of it now, but god, there was a time when there was nothing else I would listen to. Some of this still stands to this day.
   
4. "There Will Be No Divorce" by The Mountain Goats, from The Coroner's Gambit
   8/10 - John Darnielle can do no wrong. Also, when he was writing this album, he probably could have stolen psychiatric medications from the mental hospital to give to me, if I really really wanted to abuse lithium.
   
5. "Martha" by Tom Waits, from Closing Time
   10/10 - "Those were days of roses. Poetry and prose, and Martha, all I had was you and all you had was me." Tom Waits, from the first album, before he really had the voice. But this is a guy who started off his career supremely talented. Anyone who starts off his first album with "Ol' 55" puts anything I've ever done to shame.
   
6. "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears
   8/10 - Not everyone. I could very happily stay in bed if whoever rules the world wanted to bring me booze and line the others up against the walls across the street, so I can see.
   
7. "Pale Blue Eyes" by the Velvet Underground, from the Velvet Underground
   9/10 - Good song. If I took more heroin, could I write something like this?
   
8. "Atlantic City" by Tom Thumb, from Kindermusik
   10/10 - Tom Thumb (a guy who I'm apparently only two degrees of separation away from, oddly enough) covers Sprinsteen's greatest song (which made an appearance here only a couple of weeks ago) with a breathless agonized reading, making a song that really renders me unable to do anything other than listen to it unfold each time, even when I know how badly it's going to end.
   
9. "Rebellion (Lies)" by The Arcade Fire, from Funeral
   9/10 - I'm becoming slowly convinced this is the best song on the album. When I'm not listening to "Neighborhood #1" or "Wake Up," at least. When those are on, they're the best song. This is why I have three movies that are my favorite of all time, and my list of top five favorite books is about twenty books long. I have trouble with these things. Oh well.
   
10. "Only In Dreams" by Weezer, from The Blue Album
    8/10 - "But when we wake, it's all been erased. And so it seems...only in dreams." Except played ear-crushingly loud.
    

8.7/10 - Yeah, I know. I was kinda boring with the commentary this time. But these songs are so fucking good, for the most part, that they really don't need me here to prop them up.
