Post-Modern Drunk: Yellow Peril
I don't normally get political here on happyrobot-alcohol, randomness, and my own stupidity and rage are my most common topics-but WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE???

I don't quite get how people can go insane and start shooting people-I don't totally get the frame of mind you have to be in to do that, but I can remember thinking when I was a kid dumb shit like, "When I go, I want to take a lot of people with me." But that was childish stupidity of me, before I learned the bare minimum of empathy (and yes, I do have a bare minimum of empathy, smartass).

What I do not get is the rampant stupidity of people who can watch something like this unfold, and then...well, they think. They think and think and think. And the stupidest comment that comes to their head, they focus on and refine it, stripping out anything remotely resembling intelligence, all to make it ten times dumber than even they initially thought possible.

A couple examples here. Examples that make me so fucking angry that right now I'm having trouble typing this. So I'm just going to post them up, and try to collect myself.

First, from Debbie Schlussel, the Costco Coulter.
Librescu, a 76-year-old Holocaust survivor and Israeli, was a professor at VTU, yesterday, when the gunman tried to enter his classroom. But he stopped the gunman and saved the lives of his students by jumping in front of him and giving his life.
[snip]
On the Palestinian side, Jamal Al-Barghouti, a Palestinian Student from the "West Bank" (who grew up in Saudi Arabia) took video of the shooting that made TV worldwide. His film didn't save a single person, but he's getting far more media attention and kudos than the barely-mentioned Librescu is getting.
If that isn't hateful enough, how about this incredibly tone-deaf and stupid comment, from John Derbyshire?
Where was the spirit of self-defense here? Setting aside the ludicrous campus ban on licensed conceals, why didn't anyone rush the guy? It's not like this was Rambo, hosing the place down with automatic weapons. He had two handguns for goodness' sake-one of them reportedly a .22.

At the very least, count the shots and jump him reloading or changing hands. Better yet, just jump him. Handguns aren't very accurate, even at close range. I shoot mine all the time at the range, and I still can't hit squat. I doubt this guy was any better than I am. And even if hit, a .22 needs to find something important to do real damage-your chances aren't bad.
If blaming the victim doesn't quite work for you, there's always blaming...well, just see for yourself. This is from Carol Iannone with the National Review Online:
And I'm sorry, some will really think me foolish, but I don't think dorms should be co-ed, so that crazed, jealous boyfriends can enter their girlfriends' dorms and kill them and the innocent young men who come to their aid. If it had been a single-sex dorm, the killer might not have been able to enter so readily. There aren't enough difficulties getting young people through college these days so that we have to deal with "domestic disputes" in their dormitories as well?

And, sorry again, but thoughts also arise on the killer's being an English major and on the spiritual emptiness of much education nowadays.
I'm the last person to hate someone for being an asshole, but this is different. Why do some people have to be such bastards?
