Post-Modern Drunk: You Probably Didn't Notice...
But I was away for awhile. Ten days with no internet access at all and very limited phone access. So, of course, I wasn't blogging. Of course, I don't blog at all anyway, so you probably didn't even notice the change.

But I was in fact away. For some time. For a couple of days, I was in Maine, driving to, participating in, and driving back from a 150 mile three day bike ride from the New Hampshire boarder to the sea. It was about 50 miles a day, which is a lot of biking, even for the state that I've gotten myself into, and the weather on the last day was probably the shittiest weather you could imagine for biking fifty miles in. 55 degrees and rain. Rain that got into my shoes, and past my water resistant jacket, and everywhere. Hypothermia type rain. I almost quit the ride. Seriously.

But you know what got me through? I started to sing. And sing. And sing. Any song I knew even partially. I know parts of "Once in A Lifetime," though not enough to piece it together when Talking Heads aren't playing. I know most of "Subterranien Homesick Blues," though I have trouble spitting it out fast enough even when I'm not going 20 miles an hour uphill. What I do know is all of the Mountain Goats "No Children," which, I have to say, is insanely fun to sing at the top of your lungs in a group of people you don't know who might want to know why you're screaming, "I hope we all die!!!" as you approach the hill.

It was all downhill, narrative-wise, after that. Seriously, I've got nothing else for you. I spent five days in a cabin, near a lake, with my girlfriend. Our cats weren't there. That was the only downside. We missed them. And then we came home, and they'd missed us, and they've spent the time claiming us and making sure we're not leaving again. I can imagine the welcome at work will not be quite so pleasant, and is likely to involve more stacks of things and less meowing.
