Post-Modern Drunk: My Year In Music In Review
I didn't get any new music this year. These past two years seem to have been the years that have broken me on getting new music. Oh well. I lasted longer than most. Most people's music tastes ossify the year they graduate from high school--I managed to tack on an extra decade to that. I plunged more into music that I already liked, and only really got new albums from people I was already paying attention to. 2009 was also the year that I spent three months listening to break-up songs. Anyway, here's what I was listening to the most (okay, not what I was listening to the most. If you want a straight breakdown, you can go to my Last.fm page and take a look at the charts. But here's what I find interesting to talk about).
Songs
  1. Talking Heads - "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)" I listened to this song about a third more than second place (second place was "Once in a Lifetime" but, while I love that song, it's a song from earlier in my life). And that's not including the Stop Making Sense version, which is even better, which I listened to a lot and watched in its entirety on YouTube another couple dozen times. And that's also not including the Miles Fisher cover of it, which is interesting in its own right and worth watching the American Psycho inspired video for it on YouTube
  2. The Mountain Goats - "One Fine Day" Live cover from ZOOP concert: This is one of the best covers I've ever heard, and I listened to it a lot, over and over and over again.
  3. The Mountain Goats - "Standard Bitter Love Song #1" Also from ZOOP:
  4. Bon Iver - "Skinny Love": A break-up song.
  5. Neutral Milk Hotel - "In The Aeroplane Over the Sea": A love song.
  6. Billy Bragg - "A New England": A lost youth song.
  7. Bishop Allen - "Flight 180": A hopeful love song maybe with a little lost youth in there as well.
  8. Smog - "Dress Sexy at My Funeral": Apparently, spending time in the hospital worried I was going to die made me extra succeptable to songs about wanting people to remember you fondly after you go. There was a time where this song would make me break into tears.
  9. Phoenix - "Lisztomania": This is perhaps the only song that came out this year (did this come this year, even?). And it's on here a) because it's really infectious, and my immune system is compromised, and b) there was a great video of the Brat Pack "dancing" to this song that I really loved.
  10. The Mountain Goats - "This Year": Well. I made it through the year. It didn't kill me.
Most Listened To Albums
  1. The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs: What else could I listen to this year?
  2. Menomena - Friend and Foe
  3. The Mountain Goats - ZOOP Concert, June 16th and 17th, 2007
  4. Radiohead - In Rainbows: This kind of surprised me. I guess I've listened to it a lot.
  5. Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over the Sea: A perennial favorite
  6. Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
  7. The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love: I think I mostly listened to this over and over again to try to figure out if I liked it. I guess I like it. I don't love it, though.
  8. The Pixies - Surfer Rosa/Doolittle: Technically, separate albums, but apparently I listened to them both back to back a lot.
  9. The Mountain Goats - Talahassee/We Shall All Be Healed: See number 8.
  10. Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense: Probably buoyed up even more by my obsessively relistening to "This Must Be The Place"
No new music at all. I wonder if it's time to start back up. I have a playlist of "Albums to Judge." It's got about 4,500 tracks in it, of songs that I need to listen to and decide if I'm going to keep or get rid of. There's always the possibility there's something I'm going to wind up loving in there, isn't there?
