sunshine jen: My Film Awards 2011

These awards mean absolutely nothing and are totally subject to change on a whim. There are also no acting awards, so they completely lack the elements of glamour and false modesty.

Best Tongue Twisty Title

Martha Marcy Mae Marlene

Mar-Mar-Ma-Mar. I wonder how many different variations were heard by art house box office staff.

Runner Up: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Am I the only one who wants to call it Tinkle Trailer Shoulder Spry?

Best Use of The in a Movie Title

The Help

Otherwise, it would be a Beatles movie.

The Kick Ass Award (or the film that made me go, hell yeah)

Bridesmaids

I forgive the Wilson Phillips song because the wedding dress shop scene is comic greatness. And bonus: It’s a movie about a wedding in which costs are actually mentioned.

Best Film of the Year (or the film that turned my insides into mush for days after viewing it because I knew I was watching something, and I can’t talk rationally about it, it just hit me in the guts)

Shame

I had seen Hunger. I knew it would be intense. How did our definitions of public and private get all messed up?

The Little Treat Award (or the film that delighted me from beginning to end)

Queen to Play (Joueuse)

A cleaning woman in Corsica takes up chess. It came and went, but it’s now on DVD.

The Nausea Award (the film that made me physically ill)

Source Code

Source Code went from a moving train which kept blowing up, through some straggly lights, into a claustrophobic pod. It eventually ended.

Best Subtext in a Super Hero Film

X Men: First Class

Groovy mutants.

Best Movie that I Saw On Christmas Day with Family and Liked More Than I Thought I Would

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Although I can not remember much of it. It all went by in a blur.

Best Movie That Made Me Want to Travel

Midnight in Paris

Owen Wilson goes to Paris and meets dead literary people. My kind of holiday.

The Yes! Yes! Award (for the movie that’s winning a lot of awards, and I’m okay with that)

The Artist

The dog is cute.

The Happy If It’s Nominated Award (for the movie that isn’t winning a lot of awards even though it’s really good)

Win Win

Paul Giamatti and high school wrestling. It’s just a good movie.

The Unexciting Excitement Award (for the film that took something unexciting and made it exciting)

Moneyball

Who ever thought OBP could be so exciting? Last year, The Social Network won this award.

The Huh???? Award (for the movie that I don’t get what all the fuss is about)

The Future

I’m not a Miranda July hater. I liked Me and You and Everyone We Know, but this film just annoyed me. Hasn’t she ever shopped at Ross?

Runner Up: The Descendants

Hawaii is pretty, but it didn’t have the spit bucket drinking scene that Sideways had.

The TV Award (I know it’s trashy, but I can’t stop watching)

Downton Abbey

Season 2 is coming.

The Final Shoutout Award

Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life

This is the one about Serge Gainsbourg with puppets.

Runner Up: Wings of Desire

I saw Wings of Desire again in a movie theatre. Peter Falk, Solveig Dommartin on a trapeze, Nick Cave, Berlin, and those angels. It’s still beautiful.
