sunshine jen: More Fun With Aperol

Earlier this month, there was a nice article on my favorite Italian aperitivo in the New York Times. I have been having fun mixing Aperol with gin for years. The Aperol and gin dance is pretty, orange, and happy.

The Times article featured a recipe for an Il Sorpasso Cocktail which mixes Aperol with bourbon, honey, lemon, and soda water. In all my years of playing with Aperol, I had never mixed it with bourbon or rye. I didn’t think the flavor would stand up. But what the heck, I decided to try it.

Even though I’m not a big fan of honey in adult beverages, it was a nice drink. However, I prefer my cocktails straight up, so I came up with a cocktail variation glass variation.

Il Sorpasso 2.0

1 oz Aperol
1 oz Bourbon (Rye also works)
1 tsp Agave syrup (easily gotten at Trader Joes)
1 tsp Lemon juice

Combine all in a cocktail shaker. Shake it, shake it, shake it, shake it. Pour into an iced cocktail glass.

Pretty.

Aperol Cocktail

Note: When I was making the cocktail to take a picture of it, I used 1 ½ oz of Aperol and 1 1/2 oz of Rye. It came out a little too sweet, so I added two drops of lemon bitters to even it out.

I must remember that cocktails are not super models. They can’t just perform for the camera.
