sunshine jen: Anxious Pedestrian Killers

This week, I glanced at two headlines that made me pause. First, according to a study, more Americans are feeling anxious. Second, the number of pedestrian deaths in the United States has gone up.

As a habitual pedestrian, I found myself feeling a bit anxious. I guess I don't have to worry about terrorists or mass shooters. I have to worry about crossing the street because I might meet a car belonging to an anxious driver.

But I won't give into anxiety. That way leads to the dark side.

I hear Alec Guinness say: that way leads to the dark side, and I feel better. Maybe I should become a Jedi pedestrian.

As I walk down the street, I will work on my Jedi mind trick: This is not the pedestrian you wish to hit. I can go about my business. I'm moving along.

Maybe I'll get into the whole Jedi cloak look or construct a light saber.

Or maybe, just maybe, I will walk with alertness. For me, walking is a calming experience. I am able to clear my head, and my body relaxes. I don't run. I walk, and I don't feel anxious.
