sunshine jen: The Hokey Pokey

Recently when I was driving around LA, I ended up in the left turn lane behind a car with a bumper sticker that read: What if the Hokey Pokey IS what it’s all about?

It’s rare that one sees bumper stickers that question the meaning of life, and I pondered the Hokey Pokey as I completed my left turn and pulled into the parking garage next to my local Trader Joes. In fact I found myself singing it as I got out of my car.

You put your right foot in.
You put your right foot out.
You put your right foot in,
And you shake it all about.
You do the Hokey Pokey
And you turn yourself around.
That’s what it’s all about.

Hey, maybe the bumper sticker has something there. My favorite part of the song has always been the big finale:

You put your whole self in.
You take your whole self out.
You put your whole self in.
And you shake it all about
You do the Hokey Pokey
And you turn yourself around.
That’s what it’s all about.

Maybe the key to life is to shake it all about. Shake it, shake it, shake it, shake it.
