sunshine jen: When the Office Plant Dies

I don’t know if it is a symbol or an omen, but the office plant died yesterday. Its death didn’t come as a surprise. The plant had been dying for some time. We sometimes forgot to water it, and its only light came from the fluorescent tubes in the ceiling.

I don’t know what kind of plant it was. It originally had three stems and some thin green leaves. Then, one of the stems died, then another stem died, and today, there was nothing in the white ceramic pot with green leaves painted on the side.

Are offices silent killers? Should we turn our fears not to the terrorists or global warming or economic instability but to the threat that offices have on our society? If I plant can’t stay alive, what does that say about the rest of us?
