Nutshell Kingdom: walking before midnight
2005

Sometimes I start walking to no particular place, looking for food or comfort or stray chance to take me up in its loving arms and cradle me into the night. Usually I just walk.

Last night, after work, that's what happened. I strolled to the bookshop and bought a magazine. I strolled up Connecticut, looking for good place to sit and read. I turned right off of Dupont. I turned left on 18th. I strolled the Adams Morgan corridor. All of the restaurants and bars were shut. There was a water main busted. i saw it; a fire hydrant gushing water all over crosstown traffic, white plumes of water spilling out, covering the road, giving all the local waitresses and bartenders a welcome and unexpected extended break. I wished I was one of them for a second or two.

Finally, I found a club sandwich and a Yuengling. Got lost in DC's famous spoke-like roads trying to find my train station. Walked for hours. Woke up sore in the calves. Shins felt funny. I was wearing dress shoes the whole time.
