Nutshell Kingdom: It Happens Every Summer
2006

...the hottest week of the year. This year, I'm adjusting better than usual. I'm lucky to work in an fairly open location with trees, bushes, etc. You can really tell that something is gobbling up the carbon dioxide and replenishing the oxygen. Last summer, I was working downtown with the self-important hi-rise people and it was nasty. Sweating on the subway in a sportscoat. Ick. This summer I am waiting it out, moving slower like an animal, counting the days till autumn.

Still, this weather makes me miss the Shenandoah Valley with its shady trails and waterfalls and light traffic.

...the Yankees taking over first place from the Red Sox. Every year. Damn. Yesterday, it was announced that captain Jason Varitek would be needing knee surgery and a wounded blackbird appeared on the the basepaths of Fenway Park.

Dark omens.
