Pony: Bright Leaves
2.10.2005

Last night, thanks to the finger-on-the-pulse-ness of Brett Lamb, I went to see Bright Leaves, the latest installment of Doc Soup, the monthly documentary series that leads up to Hot Docs.

The documentary was really interesting for many reasons. It was a non-preachy look into the tobacco industry of North Carolina. It was a family album. It was shot over several years. Every scene was so lovingly edited and overlayed with music, each segment felt like the closing montage, only to fade into another scene of equal sentimental if fragmented import.

I really liked the narrator, too, with his understated storytelling and dry sense of humour. It reminded me of all the great North Carolinans I have met through happyrobot. The accents, the names, and the pace of storytelling that is now so familiar to me. When am I going to get to come down to NC?
