Pony: Back to you
11.29.2009

A friend of mine suggested  Gillian Welch's "I dream a highway back to you" as a listening choice. A ticket to the mystical sublime, he said. If you are in a meditative mood and have 15 minutes to spare.

Sunday morning at the diner
Hollywood trembles on the verge of tears
I watched the waitress for a thousand years
I dream a highway back to you

Where has this song been all my life?  I love the epic, mystical meditative songs you can just curl up inside for a sublime quarter-hour. There must be a whole class of songs under that category.

When I was younger, that song was Dylan's "Visions of Johanna". The slow version.
I must have written those lyrics down several times until I knew them by heart.

The fiddler, he now steps to the road
He writes everything's been returned which was owed
On the back of the fish truck that loads
While my conscience explodes
The harmonicas play the skeleton keys and the rain
And these visions of Johanna are now all that remain

What song is that for you?

Update: I made a grooveshark playlist with all your suggestions tonight and I am baking good things and humming along.
