Post-Modern Drunk: Road Trip (A Real One!) Random Ten (2/17/06)

1. "Since U Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson, from Breakaway
   8/10 - Uff da. So many rules broken right here. Not only do I have a song from an American Idol contestant, I have a top 40 hit, and I'm breaking my "no stupid abbreviations in the title" rule (like "U" for "you," 2 for etc., etc. Sorry, Artist formerly and once again known as Prince.) Sadly, it's, well, shit, catchier than the bird flu.
   
2. "Sweethearts on Parade" by M. Ward, from Transistor Radio
   6/10 - I'm not yet really on the M. Ward bandwagon. Convince me why I should listen to a band with a shaky falsetto being sung at the bottom of an elevator shaft.
   
3. "Spiders (Kidsmoke)" by Wilco, from The Ghost is Born
   4/10 - So. We've got some time. How are the kids? What is your opinion on supply-side economics? Do you think Paris Hilton really is as vapid as she seems? How is that possible?
   
   Let's read the entire Mahabharata out loud.
   
   Now, okay, hmmm. Translate it into ebonics.
   
   Oh, Christ, is that song still droning on? That's enough of that.
   
4. "Fire" by Jimi Hendrix, from Are You Experienced?
   7/10 - It's occasionally easy to forget how much Jimi rocked. Luckily, the Random Ten is here to remind us.
   
5. "Ooh La La" by The Faces, from Rushmore Soundtrack
   9/10 - I first heard Rod Stewart doing "Rhythm of my Heart," a song I liked primarily because the video had forests being napalmed. This song is probably scored a couple points higher than it would have been if it hadn't been etched into my ears from seeing Rushmore repeatedly. Wes Anderson does that to me alot.
   
6. "Terrible Lie (Live)" by Nine Inch Nails, from And All That Could Have Been
   5/10 - I had the only CD player in the house while growing up. My mom bought a CD once, though, and tried to put it in to listen to it--putting it on top of the CD that was in there. I wish I could have seen her face when she tried to listen to Bette Midler and Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral started up with "March of the Pigs."
   
   This has nothing to do with "Terrible Lie," but I don't have anything else to say about my poor taste in music as a kid.
   
7. "Atlantic City" by Bruce Springsteen, from Nebraska
   9/10 - From his most inexplicable opening line, "Well, they blew up the chicken man in Philly last night, blew up his house too," Springsteen unspools his best song. He's not the greatest lyricist, by far, but damn, he can sell lyrics like almost no other artist can.
   
8. "On the Face of It" by The Evens, from The Evens
   5/10 - Apparently, Ian MacKaye from Fugazi went on to set up this band. If I cared about Fugazi, I would call this fact "interesting."
   
9. "This Heart's On Fire" by Wolf Parade, from Apologies to the Queen Mary
   7/10 - Bands with "Wolf" in the title are the new black. Most of them suck. Wolf Parade does not. Here endeth the lesson.
   
10. "Helplessly Hoping" by Crosby, Stills & Nash, from Crosby, Stills & Nash
    6/10 - If you can ignore the incredibly silly alliteration running through the song, CS&N puts together a nice tune here.

6.6/10 - I dream of a day where I break 8/10. Also, occasionally I dream about Freemasons who are also pirates.
