Post-Modern Drunk: Stephin Merritt is my Wingman Random Ten (3/3/06)

1. "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley, from Live at Sin-E
   7/10 - I love this song, but Buckley apparently thought he was in Grateful Dead when he did live show--a minute and a half of what would be called "noodling" on his guitar if it went faster before getting to the song itself. Once he starts going, it's good. But it takes awhile. Fun fact. Two animals became extinct during the listening of this song.
   
2. "Clint Eastwood" by Gorillaz, from Gorillaz
   7/10 - One of the best songs done by a cartoon band.
   
3. "99 Anthems" by Radiohead vs. Jay-Z
   6/10 - I somehow wound up with a half-dozen mash-ups of "99 Problems" before I ever got the original song. I'm not a huge fan of the song, but somehow, I could listen to different variations of it for nearly an hour. This one, with the distinctive and utterly addictive guitar from Radiohead's "National Anthem" is one of the catchier versions.
   
4. "Sea Ghost" by The Unicorns, from Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone
   7/10 - Huh. Apparently I might be wrong. I've had this album for over a year, and hated it everytime I tried to play it. I have friends who swear by it, though, and listening to this song for only the third time ever, I can kind of see why.
   
5. "Waitin' on a Sunny Day" by Bruce Springsteen, from The Rising
   5/10 - Yes, I know it's a musical response to 9/11, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's all that good, Bruce. Sorry. Write me another "Atlantic City," please.
   
6. "Meantime" by Imogen Heap, from
   5/10 - The voice of Frou Frou + a bland beat + one interesting line repeated over and over ("Will the next love be the real one?") = one mediocre song.
   
7. "The One You Really Love" by The Magnetic Fields, from 69 Love Songs
   8/10 - "I gaze into your eyes of blue, but their beauty is not for me." Like Jesus, Stephin Merritt is my co-pilot.
   
8. "She Can Stop Traffic" by Television Personalities, from My Dark Places
   7/10 - I'm not entirely sure how I wound up with so much music from people who can't really sing. Stephin Merritt, Bob Dylan, Jeff Mangum, Tom Waits...it all kinda gives me hope. Television Personalities isn't in their league, but it's fun in a sort of silly sort of way.
   
9. "Tangled Up in Blue" by Bob Dylan, from Blood on the Tracks: NY Sessions
   9/10 - An alternate take of the song, with different lyrics, that somehow seems more heartbreaking than the original.
   
10. "Making Time" by Creation, from Rushmore Soundtrack
    8/10 - It is impossible to listen to this song and not think of how much I loved "Rushmore."
    

6.9/10 - What a weak week. I should really start cheating on these.
